In 1975, when Emergency was imposed in the country, many leaders of Jharkhand took to the streets in protest against it. Among them was Ranchi MLA CP Singh, who had left his intermediate exams on the call of Jayaprakash Narayan.

Ranchi: That dark night of June 25, 1975, was an indecent chapter in India’s democracy. There was dissatisfaction across the country, and students and youth from Gujarat to Bihar came out to protest against it. Indira Gandhi’s government declared emergency at midnight, taking away people’s fundamental rights and imposing censorship on the press. This resulted in a movement across the country in which youth participated and the opposition against Indira Gandhi intensified under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan. Even today, the memories of the difficulties of living during that period, which were shared by Jayaprakash Narayan and the agitators, are still alive.
CP Singh had not given the intermediate exam on the orders of JP.
The student movement had then reached Bihar and became the center of the movement there. Leaders of Jharkhand also joined the movement on the call of Jayaprakash Narayan. Ranchi MLA CP Singh had been playing an important role in this. He told that when he was studying intermediate from Marwari College, all those students had received orders from Jaiprakash Narayan ji that no student should appear for his examinations. Following his orders, none of them had given their examinations. On 26 January 1976, he was arrested and kept overnight in the Kotwali police station. Right after this he was sent to jail. After being in jail, he saw that many agitators were already in jail. Even after his release from jail, he was not allowed to take the examination, due to which he wasted a year. He was released from jail on 30 July 1976. Immediately after this he again joined the movement, which saved him from being arrested again. Mr Singh said that there was a terrible atmosphere all around at that time, due to which there was no possibility of meeting anyone in the jail, because there was a fear that they might be identified and arrested.

He participated in various activities of the movement in Hazaribagh and considered it an important moment of his life. He was proud of being active in this movement, after which he was released from jail after the victory of Janata Dal in 1977.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s son was also lodged in Hazaribagh jail.
Palamu was not left untouched by the total revolution i.e. JP movement. According to socialist leader Tarakeshwar Azad, many people like him had given impetus to this movement. While discussing the JP movement, socialist leader Shri Azad said that it was basically a student movement. This movement started from Patna, Bihar on 18 March 1974. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi started atrocities against the agitators to crush this movement. On the instructions of the government, the police administration took condemnable action like lathicharge on the agitators and they were arrested and put in jail. He told that in 1974 he was imprisoned in Hazaribagh jail along with other comrades. At that time, many agitating students of Palamu including Mrityunjay Prasad, elder son of the country’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Karpuri Thakur, Sachchidanand Singh, Pramod Shukla, Inder Singh Namdhari were lodged in Hazaribagh jail. The country also witnessed Emergency during the movement. In 1975, the central government imposed emergency in the country. During this time, he along with other agitators was kept in Daltonganj jail for 19 months.
